Teach Your Child the Importance of Brushing

Here at Sunshine Smiles, we always try to caution parents about giving their kids sugary snacks. Cavities are the #1 most common chronic disease among children in America, after all. Healthy snacks are the best choice, but no matter what your child snacks on, it’s essential to teach them brushing afterward. Here are some tips that will help.

Brushing to Storytelling

Children love stories. Telling them a story is one of the best ways to help them absorb lessons, so put those storytelling skills to use, parents! Tell your kids how cavity bugs like jumping on their teeth after a snack. Give the cavity bugs silly names. Turn brushing into a mission to chase away the cavity bugs, which will become a fun activity for them.

Brushing to Music

Music is a tried-and-true way to get kids to brush their teeth. Put on one of their favorite songs (find one in the 2-minute range) and have them brush until the song is over.

Lead by Example

Every child likes to mirror what their parents do. If you make brushing your teeth after a snack a habit, they’ll be watching and want to do what Mom or Dad is doing. Have a snack at the same time as your child and then brush your teeth together.

Positive Reinforcement

Celebrate every victory when you’re teaching your child to brush after snacks. A reward chart with gold stars or stickers can work wonders.

Encourage Healthy Snacks

Healthy snacks like cheese and crunchy veggies will make the battle against cavities and tooth decay much easier. The CDC also has some great tips for healthy teeth for your children.
