When Should Kids Get Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are among the most effective tools for protecting growing smiles. Cavities are among the most common childhood dental concerns, but also among the most preventable. Here’s how they can help.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Sealants are a type of special dental resin applied to the permanent molars and premolars. These back teeth have deep grooves that can trap food and bacteria. They’re also more difficult for kids to brush effectively. Sealants act as a barrier that keeps out plaque and acids that can lead to cavities. They also have antibacterial properties, so they provide immediate protection once they’re applied.

When is the Right Time for Them?

Permanent molars first erupt at around age 6 or 7. Most kids will benefit from the first application around this time. Second molars come in around age 11 to 13, the best time for a follow-up sealant application. Applying sealants during this window helps protect the teeth before decay even has a chance to develop.

In some cases, your pediatric dentist might recommend sealants on baby teeth if they have deep grooves or if a child is at high risk for cavities.

Applying Dental Sealants

The process of applying sealants is quick, painless, and completely non-invasive. It just takes a few minutes per tooth, and your child walks out with an extra layer of protection that will last several years. Studies have found that dental sealants can reduce the risk of cavities in molars by 80 percent or more. They’re highly effective and odorless.

If your child is approaching age six or hasn’t had dental sealants, it’s a great time to start planning for them. Contact us at Sunshine Smiles to schedule an appointment!
